The Brunton in Musselburgh is the foremost venue for all East Lothian’s creative arts, event and entertainment needs and is offering a wide range of shows in the next few weeks.
Opening the Lunchtime Concert season, virtuoso saxophonist Dean Walker Garrity performs a programme including Debussy, Silvestrini and Poulenc on Tuesday 4 October from 12 Noon. Enjoy a delicious soup and a sandwich with friends in the Venue1 bar before being swept up in Dean Walker Garrity’s incredible music.
1944 – As life in Britain’s cities becomes increasingly perilous, three evacuee children – Lily (Beau Gadsdon), Pattie (Eden Hamilton) and Ted (Zac Cudby) Watts – are sent by their mother from Salford to the Yorkshire village of Oakworth in The Railway Children Return (PG) on Wednesday 5 October at 7.30pm. There to meet the children on the train station platform are Bobbie Waterbury (Jenny Agutter, reprising her iconic role in the original film), her daughter, Annie (Sheridan Smith), and grandson Thomas (Austin Haynes), and with their help the evacuees are soon settling into their new life in the countryside. When the children discover injured American soldier Abe (KJ Aikens) hiding out in the railyard at Oakworth Station, they are thrust into a dangerous quest to assist their new friend who, like them, is a long way from home.
The National Theatre Live’s Jack Absolute Flies Again (12A) is just the bee’s knees this Thursday 6 October at 7pm. A rollicking new comedy by Richard Bean (One Man, Two Guvnors) and Oliver Chris (Twelfth Night) the action centres on a WWII flying ace and his romantic aspirations. After an aerial dog fight, Pilot Officer Jack Absolute flies home to win the heart of his old flame, Lydia Languish. Back on British soil, Jack’s advances soon turn to anarchy when the young heiress demands to be loved on her own, very particular, terms.
Join musical magpies Michael McGoldrick, John McCusker & John Doyle for their popular blend of top – class folk songs, tunes and charming bonhomie on Friday 7 October at 7.30pm. With their vast repertoire, this will be an evening to remember. Described as the masters of flute, fiddle, song and guitar they have worked with the biggest and brightest and bring you a night of beautifully crafted music. Having shared stages and recording studios with everyone from Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler to Paul Weller, Joan Baez and Linda Thompson, Mike, John & John are a rare musical treat you’ll savour for a very long time.
The Brunton’s resident theatre company Catherine Wheels debut their new production of Kissing Linford Christie by Victoria Beesley on Saturday 8 October at 2.30pm & 6.30pm. Inspired by author Victoria’s own childhood obsession with athletics, this is a story about loving failure and dreaming big – even if there’s no chance you’ll make that dream come true. Vickie wants to compete at the Olympics. There is only one obstacle; she isn’t very good at sport. Yet despite the odds, her love for athletics takes her all the way to London 2012. Recommended for ages 8 plus.
Love and duty collide and nations clash in Verdi’s political drama, Aida, screened by the Royal Opera House on Wednesday 12 October at 6.45pm. Starring Elena Stikhina and conducted by Antonio Pappano, this new production, director Robert Carsen situates Verdi’s large-scale political drama within a contemporary world, framing its power struggles and toxic jealousies in the apparatus of a modern, totalitarian state.
Crown Ballet presents the most famous ballet of all time on Thursday 13 October at 7.30pm. Swan Lake is one of Tchaikovsky’s best works, featuring some of ballet’s most memorable music and breath-taking dance. After a very long break we are proud to present to you the UK Premier of this ballet company from Moldova. A wonderful evening out and memories which you will cherish long after the final curtain falls.
