Half of the Scottish Women’s team comes from Edinburgh.
The World Junior Curling Championships take place from 16 -23 February in Queen’s Place Emera Centre,Liverpool, Nova Scotia.
A hundred of the world’s best young curlers are in Liverpool, Nova Scotia ready to compete from tomorrow at the World Junior Championships – and Team Davie are there representing Scotland. They earned the right to represent Scotland following their success at the Scottish Curling Junior Championships last month in Aberdeen.
Andrew Barr from Balerno has coached Team Davie for five years now. Two members of the Barr family play in the team, Andrew’s daughter Emma (19) along with her cousin Kirsty (19).
Skip Lisa Davie (17) is from Stirling and second, Anna Skuse (17), is from Linlithgow and is Head Girl at Linlithgow Academy.
The Scottish Women’s Team is as follows :
Fourth: Lisa Davie (Skip)
Third: Kirsty Barr (Vice-skip)
Second: Annabel Skuse
Lead: Emma Barr
Alternate: Beth Farmer
Coach: Andrew Barr
The Barr girls are following a family tradition as Gillian Barr competed in the same competition in 1993 along with her team-mates Claire Milne, Janice Watt, Nikki Mauchline and Karen Addison – and returned home with Gold. And in Aberdeen last month Andrew’s middle daughter, Jane, won the Ladies Sportsmanship Award at the Scottish Curling Finals in Aberdeen, voted on by the other competing teams and their coaches. Gillian Barr won that award too during her curling career.
Team Davie are making their debut at the WJCC. The women’s event includes Canada, Sweden, China, Norway, United States, Korea, Switzerland, Scotland, Russia and Japan. Three skips return from last year’s event – Korea’s Minji Kim who won the third leg of the Curling World Cup in Jonkoping, Sweden earlier this month, Russia’s Vlada Rumiantseva and Norway’s Maia Ramsjfell.
The Edinburgh Reporter wishes both Scotland teams all the best this year and we wait to hear how they get on in the championships. We know they have a big family support arriving in Canada today!
The men’s team of Ross Whyte, Duncan McFadzean, James Craik, Euan Kyle, Ryan McCormack and coach Greg Drummond are also competing in Canada.
The WJCC begins tomorrow 16 February 2019 with a North American clash in the men’s event between Canada and the US.
A total of 15 games from The World Junior Curling Championships will be live streamed on World Curling TV from 16 to 23 February 2019. Click here to access the live stream through the World Curling Federation’s Facebook page.
