Police are appealing for witnesses after an elderly woman was robbed within her home in Niddrie Mill Avenue just after 7pm last night.

The 88-year-old victim answered her door to a male who pushed past her into the property, before grabbing her purse and making off.

Local officers were then contacted and inquiries are ongoing to identify the suspect. He is described as white, around 5ft 6ins tall with a small build, dark brown hair and wearing a dark-coloured hooded jacket.

Detective Sergeant Mark Lumsden from Gayfield CID said: “While the woman was not injured, this was a very upsetting incident for her and we are pursuing a number of lines of inquiry to trace the culprit.

“The investigation is being progressed under Operation Arable and anyone who remembers seeing any suspicious activity in or around Niddrie Mill Avenue on Sunday evening should contact police immediately.

“In particular, we are keen to speak with the driver of a dark-coloured private hire saloon car, which was in the area and may have seen the suspect or have relevant information.”

Those with information can contact Gayfield CID via 101 and quote incident number 3170 of the 13th January.

Alternatively, an anonymous report can be made to the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
