After a day of speculation and rumour, John McGinn has left Hibs and joined English Championship side Aston Villa.

The 23-year-old midfielder, who has been capped nine times by Scotland, joined the Birmingham club for an undisclosed fee after signing a four-year contract.

McGinn came through the ranks at St Mirren before joining Hibernian in 2015 where he helped the club to their first Scottish Cup win in 114 years then to promotion from the Championship.

Last year, his performances were influential in Hibs’ qualifying for Europe with a fourth place finish in the top flight.

He told Aston Villa TV: “I’m really pleased to have joined the club. I’ve already visited Villa Park and the training ground and the set-up is incredible.

“The last 24 hours have been a bit of a whirlwind with so much going on but I can’t wait to take part in my first training session and make my debut.”
