We have several auction houses in Edinburgh, but if you are a beginner at bidding then perhaps you might like to try the regular sales at Ramsay Cornish? This is a friendly place and family run, where they will keep you right on all the procedure that goes along with an auction sale.

They have a very handy Buying and Selling Guide here which you could read before you go along to Jane Street. You can actually bid by email or on the phone as an absentee bidder.

The list of April sales is detailed below (they hold more sales than any other auction house in the capital) but you might be best starting off with the General Interiors sale on Saturday morning. You can usually view the goods on the days leading up to the sale, but tomorrow there will be a complete range from £10 upwards!

Included in the sale on Saturday 31 March 2018 at 11.00am there is a very nice oak barometer as well as a 1930s EPNS athletics trophy, and a Royal Mint proof set from 1988.

What would you get for around £40?

With Easter weekend upon us, the emphasis is always on bunnies but there is a lovely standing bronze model of a hare that might fit the bill as an Easter gift.

And there is a pct Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch that might be a lovely gift for her and some silver kilt pins for him.

A selection of jewellery items along with a jewellery casket could unearth a real gem and there are watercolours and etchings to bid for too.

All items will be sold under the hammer and so could fetch much more but that only adds to the excitement of the auction room!
