Gary Havelock praised his injury-hit side for leading against Championship-chasing Glasgow Tigers early on.

But it was downhill after that as Glasgow piled up the points to win 54-38 on Sunday night.

Nick Morris top scored for Berwick and their team manager Havelock, said: “It was a tough match to go into with so many guys down.

“To lead after two heats was brilliant. Sad to say it all went pear-shaped after that as we were reminded what a good side Glasgow are.”

Meanwhile, jubilant Jack Smith accepted the Rider of the Night award and revealed: “It’s my best performance for Tigers.”

Sunday’s result keeps Tigers within six points of Edinburgh Monarchs who have 32 points.

The West of Scotland club have three meetings in hand over the league leaders.

Stoke-on-Trent based Smith scored four points from two second place finishes and two blanks and is next in action in a double-header against Workington Comets this weekend.

He said: “To finally get round here and score some points and to get that award was an amazing feeling.

“Berwick were missing a few riders but they’ve got some strong riders in there and they did push us hard, but we managed to get the win.”
