2011_10 Police signs 12

Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault and large scale disturbance on Leith Walk.

At around 1am this morning  a fight broke out within the Spey Lounge involving a number of people.

This then spilled out onto the pavement and roadway before dispersing.

Police quickly arrived at the scene but found those involved had since fled the area.

A 22-year-old man sustained serious head injuries and he was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for medical attention.

A 22-year-old woman also required medical attention after suffering minor injuries. She has since been discharged and is recovering at home.

An extensive investigation involving door-to-door enquiries and a full review of the local CCTV network is now underway, which is being led by detectives from Gayfield CID.

Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to come forward.

Detective Constable Ryan Lee of Gayfield CID said: “This was an extremely violent attack and we are keen to trace all parties involved as quickly as possible.

“Leith Walk is a busy part of the city and many people had been out watching the football match between England and Scotland. We are today appealing to anyone who was in the area and who saw what happened to come forward.

“We’re also keen to hear from motorists who were travelling on Leith Walk and who were forced to slow down in order to pass the group safely.

“Those with information are asked to call police on 101 or alternatively an anonymous report can be made through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
