- Scottish Parliament – summer recess ends
- Edinburgh Airport uses confiscated items to raise charity funds
- Leith Food Assembly
- Care and Repair
- Edinburgh Riding of the Marches 2016
The Scottish Parliament has been in recess but all that comes to an end this week.
This session’s business begins in earnest tomorrow with Committee business from 10am and General Chamber business from 2pm. The committees meeting tomorrow include the Environment Climate Change and Land Reform Committee which will consider evidence from the Crown Estate in Scotland, the Health and Sport Committee which includes discussion on ‘The Implications to Scotland of Brexit’, the Delegated Powers and Law Reform Committee, Economy Jobs and Fair Work and the Justice Committee.
From 2pm the First Minister will make a statement and the government will then agree its business programme.
Ever wonder what happens to all that stuff that Edinburgh Airport confiscate from you and your fellow passengers at security?
Most people now know that you may not pass through with liquids in bottles and containers over 100ml. But those who fall foul of the rules either have to go back and check the liquids in with their luggage or surrender the items.
From today Edinburgh Airport will donate any unopened or sealed liquids and toys to charity.

[mc4wp_form id=”169103″]Heard about the Leith Food Assembly? If you want to see for yourself how it works then go along to Jeremiah’s Taproom on Elm Row anytime from 5.30pm onwards.
You are too late to order from their producers this week, but it might help you to see what is on offer and find out how it works – and they are nice people!
Read more about it here. The website will open for next week’s assembly very soon!
We have received a letter from Care and Repair who want you all to know how they might be able to help an elderly or disabled person you know.
Care and Repair Edinburgh (C&RE)is a registered charity supporting older (60+) and disabled people to live safely at home through providing a range of practical services.
C&RE is contracted by the City of Edinburgh Council (CEC) to provide the following core services:
- Small Repairs
- Adaptations
- FREE Handyperson/Volunteer
- Keysafe Fitting (Police Approved)
- Trade Referrals
We are writing to ask for your support in raising awareness of the services in place to support elderly or disabled people within the Community Council Areas. We all know an elderly or older person that may need support even if it is as simple as changing a light bulb as climbing ladders and standing on chairs is a challenge for elderly residents and is a falls risk. We want as many people to know that we are here to help and that our volunteers are trained, vetted and local.
Care and Repair can attend groups, team meetings and events so please do not hesitate to ask. We receive referrals from various support agencies across Edinburgh; Older and Disabled people directly, Friends and Family, NHS Lothian Social Work Departments, Occupational Therapists, AGE Scotland, Fire and Rescue and Community Groups. We would be pleased to work with the Community Councils across Edinburgh and grateful for any opportunities to do this as we want to support the people you represent. Would there be an opportunity to be included in a Newsletter as we have so many good news stories across all Localities, NP Areas and Community Council Areas to share with you.
Our Vision is Better at Home and ensure that we will work with and for our clients to enable them to remain as independent for as long as is possible. The increased delivery of our core services will make a significant contribution to the prevention of accidents and falls and will result in lower hospital admissions. Being a small and nimble organisation, we are able to provide a responsive service in terms of fitting hand rails, chains and keysafes to help facilitate and expedite discharge.
I look forward to hearing from you and please let me know if you would like me to send you flyers and posters to display or to share across teams.
Thank you for sharing.
Kind Regards
Geraldine O’Connor
Business Development Officer
The Edinburgh Riding of the Marches will take place in the city centre next Sunday 11 September 2016.
There is nothing quite as emotional as the sight of nearly 300 horses coming up The Royal Mile! This is a reenactment of the return of the Captain of the Trained Band who a]were responsible for keeping order in the city to the capital with news of defeat at Flooded in 1513.
The Edinburgh Captain and Lass lead the cavalcade up to the Mercat Cross where the Lord Provost will meet them. Put it in your diary now, and here are details of recommended vantage points apart from the High Street….
Spectators are requested not to venture into fields on the ride route and must at all times follow directions of ground marshals and observe parking regulations where they are in existence. Please take care not to impede the progress of the ride and support vehicles.
