Emoji, written by Imperial College Dramatic Society, is set inside a mobile phone and imagines the world that these tiny digital figurines live in. At the pinnacle of emoji-society are the top five ‘most frequently used’ emojis, and at the bottom is everyone else. The Emoji-Dream is to reach one of the top five positions but it’s a tough, fame-obsessed world to live in and there’s only one person who makes the decision about using you: Kyle, the phone’s owner.
Faith in Kyle is seen as essential in reaching one of the top spots until one night, Brian the Brown Shoe emoji – a deadbeat, lowlife nobody – is used an unprecedented 27 times in a row. Brian is skyrocketed to the top of the frequently used, and the foundations of the faith of the remaining top 5 emojis is shaken. We follow Brian as he slowly descends from the height of fame.
The company (students at Imperial College London) started with a script and used an improvisation-based process to develop characters to create this funny, irreverent piece of newly-written theatre that takes a tongue-in-cheek look at fame, faith, chance and communication.
