A scheme has been drafted for the remodelling of the BHS building on Princes Street which is to close its doors in August.
A pension fund represented by Lasalle Investment Management wants to improve the shopping facilities on Princes Street and Rose Street while creating a hotel and rooftop bar.
It appears that the planning application has been removed from the council website although you can see outline details here, there is no further information when you click through.
In Glasgow the former BHS store may become a 12 storey tower according to the Daily Business Group.
Today marks the launch of the Edinburgh Food Festival 2016 in George Square Gardens. The festival will feature some of the very best of Scotland’s food and drink producers, but will be more than food with entertainment too.
As well as delicious produce there will be themed parties in the famous Spiegeltent plus talks, debates and lessons on the topic of food production in the 21st century.
Last year’s inaugural EFF had around 20,000 visitors- the organisers expect even more this year.
July 27th-31st. Full list of contributors and events, as well as tickets, can be found here.
And as part of the Food Festival fun there will be a Waiter Race……
Taking place later today at 3pm, waiting staff are challenged to run one lap of George Square Gardens in full waiting gear, carrying a tray of festival goodies, whilst watching out for the obstacles.
Restaurants are called upon to nominate one waiter and waitress from their team to take part. Not only will the winner be given the title of fastest waiter in Edinburgh, they will be awarded two tickets to an Assembly Festival show of their choice* during this year’s Edinburgh Fringe.
When it comes to dining out in Scotland, the options are limitless and the food is unrivalled, but perhaps the unsung heroes are the fantastic waiting staff. They’re fast on their feet, have bags of energy and do it all with a side serving of friendly Scottish banter. As all waiting staff will know, this is a finely tuned art, one that should not be underestimated.
Andrew MacInnes, Co-owner of Buffalo, Edinburgh, said:
“We see waiters races in London, Paris and New York so it’s fantastic that Assembly’s getting in on the action and hosting Edinburgh’s first ever race. Our waiting staff are extremely enthusiastic about what they do, and deliver the service with finesse, so we’re thrilled to be involved in celebrating them and their talent.’
Edinburgh Food Festival runs from Wednesday 27th – Sunday 31st July. Food stalls are located around the gardens for the duration of the festival, while food talks and entertainment take place throughout the daytime.
Organisers from Cake Fest Scotland are seeking amateur bakers from Edinburgh to help create a giant edible map of Scotland. Groups or individuals are being asked to sign up to take part by choosing their favourite building and recreating it in cake. Cake Fest is a headline event of the Festival of Architecture and part of the Year of Innovation Architecture and Design and the Cake Map will be displayed to the public on 11 September in Stirling.
The event builds on the success of Cake Fest Edinburgh and during the Festival of Architecture plans are to extend the parameters to a country-wide challenge and create a cake map of the whole of Scotland with 100 buildings.
Local icons include: Scott Monument, Fettes College, the National Museum of Scotland, the National Portrait Gallery, Royal Scottish Academy and Holyrood Palace.
Simon Preston, creator and organiser of Cake Fest said:
“We’re really keen to get a great mix of bakers from across Scotland involved in this project, we’re not looking for perfectly scaled masterpieces, everyone is welcome to take part and we’ll advise and guide you throughout the challenge – but we are looking for adventurous spirits, up-for-it attitudes and a passion for Scotland’s buildings and landscape. So, calling all bake-off fans; all granny and grandads; all school kids; all community groups, get together and pick a building, pop you your aprons on and get involved.”
Karen Cunningham, Festival Director, Festival of Architecture said:
“What better way to get people thinking about the fantastic built environment than to pair it with something everyone loves: cake. We are so delighted to be bringing this event to Stirling as part of the festival and we really want to get everyone involved whether they are creating a glorious cake version of Stirling Castle, or just coming along to join the fun on September the 11th.”
To take part simply check the list of 100 buildings at www.cakefest.org.uk and offer your first and second choice.
Cake Fest will then confirm your selection and tell you what happens next. If there’s a building you love that isn’t on their list you are invited to make a suggestion!
