Hibs’ midfielder Martin Boyle scored the ‘goal of the season’ last night but he insisted that the three points was more important than the personal glory.
With time running out and Hibs looking as if they would drop another two points in the race for second place in the Championship, Boyle pounced on a defender’s clearance to volley the ball into the top corner of the net from 25 yards leaving Livingston goalkeeper Marc McCallum stranded.
Normally at the end of a game, the media discuss amongst themselves which player to request for interview. Last night there was no debate.
After the game, a delighted Boyle revealed that he was out of position when he scored. “Everyone was piling on and it was just blank and I couldn’t believe what happened but the victory was the most important thing.
“I wasn’t supposed to be in that area, I should have been up the pitch but John (McGinn) didn’t go forward and I thought I’d just float about here and see what happens and thankfully the ball came out and I just leathered it as hard as I could.
“I’m looking forward to seeing it and hopefully I can score a better one some time in my life but I can’t see it.
“It was a special moment to get the goal but we all worked hard against a team that came to sit in but at the end of the day we are all delighted to get the three points.
“Sometimes it’s hard when the fans are getting on your back a wee bit but we grinded the result out and I think we deserved it. Livingston were fighting for their lives.
“Hopefully this is the start of a run like we had earlier in the season and we can kick off from here.
“We will take it game by game. we are getting boys back from injury and we can shuffle the squad.”
