A young girl was struck by a tram this afternoon.
Police Scotland confirmed that they were advised of an incident shortly before 5pm this evening. It was reported that a tram travelling westwards on the line between the stops at Princes Street and Shandwick Place had struck a 14 year-old girl. A police spokesman said:-“She appeared to have been struck a glancing blow by a tram.”
The teenager declined any medical treatment and the tram offloaded its passengers and then proceeded back to the depot at Gogar.
Police officers will be examining the CCTV footage from the on board tram cameras and confirm that they will be treating this in the same way as any other road traffic incident would be.
A spokesman for Edinburgh Trams said:-“We can confirm that a pedestrian was struck by a tram this afternoon. We have informed the emergency services and we are investigating the incident so it would be inappropriate to go into any more detail at this stage.”
Today is the fifth day of trams running in Edinburgh. The service started on Saturday morning at 5.00am when a packed tram left the Gyle tram stop bound for York Place. Since then Edinburgh Trams have reported carrying 40,000 passengers in the first two days of operation and around 10,000 One Direction fans are reported to have used the tram to travel to Murrayfield yesterday evening.
