Unique Festival opportunity for budding photographer as the Edinburgh International Festival Photographer 2014 competition launches.
Emerging photographers are being invited to apply for the position of Festival Photographer 2o14 The Edinburgh International Festival and The Morton Charitable Trust
The opportunity for an emerging photographer, based or studying in Scotland gives them unparalleled backstage access across the International Festival to artists, staff, technical set up, rehearsals and events to bring together a rich archive of images of the events. Online galleries throughout the Festival in August can be seen on the Festival website eif.co.uk, and their work is promoted through the Festival’s Facebook and Flickr presences and an exhibition of their work mounted in the autumn.
The position, which comes with a £3,500 award, allows the photographer to develop contacts with a range of media outlets, artists, venues and agencies through the Festival period, providing a strong launch pad for their future career in the profession.
Jonathan Mills, Festival Director, said: ‘The creation of this opportunity for an emerging photographer, established through the support of The Morton Charitable Trust, is building a wonderful archive of images of the Festival which capture its effect far beyond the performances. It opens doors to a huge array of media and artistic contacts which can stand the winner in great stead for their future career. Stuart Armitt, Festival Photographer in 2013, said: ‘There is no denying the challenges that face new graduates within the creative industries today. To be offered the role of the International Festival’s official photographer 2013 was not only a great privilege but could not have come at a greater time in the development of my career.
‘To say that I have grown in confidence as a photographer is an understatement. Creatively and technically my work has vastly improved; however it is in my professional development that this role really comes into its own. This opportunity has focused my mind on my future development and who I want to be as a photographer.
