In Bristo Square today the queue was quite long but people were happy enough. They were queuing for a free meal.

Top chefs served these free meals to thousands of people.

DSC00434DSC00429The Feeding the 5000 event was organised by Edible Edinburgh which is a group brought together by the council to transform the food we eat in the capital..

On the menu was good food sourced locally or food which might otherwise have been thrown away.

On the basis that there is no such thing as a free lunch however anyone who wanted to eat had to go through the education zone to learn about recycling and the benefits of eating in season from local producers.

So what can you do?

You are encouraged to love food and hate waste – the average household throws away £35 worth of food each month and use the Edinburgh Local Food Network to source good local food.

And if you are wondering how the chefs managed to cook everything today… here is the answer!
