Holyrood Parliament

It is exactly one year till Scots will vote in the Scottish Independence Referendum on 18 September 2014.

The Edinburgh Reporter is based in the heart of the country, in the capital where the devolved government sits. If our city is to become home to a separate truly national government then we will also be in the heart of that, and for that reason we feel that some commentary is needed, but in our usual fashion this will be straightforward unbiased comment. In addition however, we are inviting others who do have a bias to write about their views.

We have not until now taken part in any of the discussion about independence. Our stance is that we do not have a view on whether independence is the right thing for Scotland or not, but we would like to be a source of information for voters to help you make up your minds by this time next year.

We propose to write a regular round up of all the news about independence that we can find, whether for or against. We also welcome commentary and opinion items about the Independence referendum. If you have something to say then please send it to us through our Submit your Story feature.

Today we will be publishing the first of our series of articles about independence, both for and against.
