QMU gets creative with Jack Vettriano

The celebrated Scottish artist, Jack Vettriano, is to hold an open discussion at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh.

The event, which will take place on Wednesday 2 October 2013, offers a unique opportunity to meet and hear about the life and work of one of Scotlandā€™s best known artists.

The Fife-born artist, whose best known work is ā€˜The Singing Butlerā€™, will discuss his inspirations and career development, during a question and answer session at the University.

Initially starting out as a mining engineer at the age of 16, Vettriano took up art after receiving a gift of watercolours. Mainly self-taught, his art work attracted attention when he submitted two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academyā€™s annual exhibition – both were accepted and sold on the first day. The following year, an equally enthusiastic reaction greeted the three paintings, which he entered for the prestigious Summer Exhibition at Londonā€™s Royal Academy, and his new life as an artist began. Since then there have been sell-out solo exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong and New York, and in 2004, Ā ā€˜The Singing Butlerā€™ was sold at Sothebyā€™s for close to Ā£750,000.

Professor Petra Wend, Principal of Queen Margaret University, said:- ā€œCreativity and Culture is one of Queen Margaret Universityā€™s flagship areas of specialism and we are really looking forward to hearing from such a successful and well-known creative talent. This is a great opportunity for our students to learn more about Jack Vettrianoā€™s work. We are also delighted to be inviting members of the public to join us at this one-off special event.ā€

As part of its community engagement programme, each year Queen Margaret University develops a range of stimulating and topical events that are open to the public.
