Fairtrade Fortnight – Rugby travel advice – Portobello roads and footpaths – Out of the Blue Flea Market – It’s Good 2 Give are having a Ball

The Lord Provost launched Fairtrade Fortnight in the city yesterday. This starts on Monday and there will be many events to attend.

Running until Sunday 10 March, the campaign will have a series of themed events taking place across the city, including food and drink tastings, talks, presentations, fairs, fetes and the presentation of the Lord Provost’s Fair Trade Awards 2013.

Fairtrade Fortnight brings together consumers, retailers, licensees, businesses, producers and campaigners nationwide to promote awareness and sales of Fairtrade products and to campaign on issues of trade justice. Read our article and watch our video here.

Scottish Rugby have advised spectators to get to the match early tomorrow. Here is what they say on their website:-

GET TO MURRAYFIELD EARLY – THERE’S A BIG CROWD AND THERE ARE ROADWORKS!
There is a sell-out crowd of over 67,000 for Sunday’s game. In addition to the sheer volume of people making their way to and from the stadium, multiple roadworks and diversions are in operation in the centre of Edinburgh and routes leading to Murrayfield, so it is imperative you allow plenty of extra time for your journey to the game. Please allow extra time if you are travelling via Haymarket as there are tram works in progress which will cause delays.  For your safety there will be pedestrian diversions in operation so please follow the instructions from the stewards, police officers and our very own “Backing Blue Crew” who are there to assist you. There are plenty of activities to enjoy at Murrayfield before the match, including a Family Zone with bands, entertainers and a “come-and-try” rugby skills area for the children. An array of food and drink outlets are available, covering all tastes from fish’n’chips to curry – so come early!

Councillor Maureen Child  writes:-

“Some of the money from the central Council roads and footways budget is always devolved to the local Portobello/Craigmillar Partnership level for priorities to be decided on by local people meeting together in the Portobello/Craigmillar Environment Forum.

Many suggestions come from local people, sometimes through residents’ and neighbourhood associations.  Past and current projects have included the Joppa ‘gazebo’ at the sewage pumping station at the east of the Promenade, Christians Path, a path between Hays Business Centre and the main road, a path from Niddrie House to the No 14 bus terminus at Greendykes, a pedestrian crossing at Coillesdene sheltered housing, more parking spaces at Newcraighall Village, traffic calming on Joppa Terrace.

Some of projects have attracted contributions from other partners such as cycling charity Sustrans and housing associations.  These  tend to be works that would not otherwise get to the top of any Council list in the foreseeable future but they do make a big difference to a neighbourhood.  Have you any suggestions for future projects next year?  Phone environment team on 529 3298 or email eastenvironment@edinburgh.gov.uk
