Edinburgh College – Appeal for witnesses to road incident – Trams – Higgs for Nobel Prize? – Hallowe’en
With 35,000 students and 1500 staff the Edinburgh College opens its doors today at four locations around the city, Granton, Milton Road, Midlothian and Sighthill. The merger of four colleges into one from today under the principal, Mandy Exley, ensures a new kid on the block in higher education spheres.

Will Professor Peter Higgs get the Nobel Prize when it is announced next week? The Independent clearly thinks that others who worked alongside the Edinburgh scientist in the earlier work to discover the Higgs Boson must also be considered.

Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses after two pedestrians (a 19-year-old man and a 20 year-old woman) were injured following a collision with a vehicle in Nicholson Square Edinburgh at around 4.50 pm on Saturday 29 September 2012.
The woman sustained only minor injury, however the man was seriously injured. He was initially taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary by ambulance and thereafter transferred to the Western General Hospital.
The driver of a blue VW Passat, stopped at the scene, and is now assisting police with their enquiries.
Sergeant Bob Walker said:- “The area is a very busy thoroughfare for both vehicles and pedestrians and there were a number of people around who may have seen what happened.
“We are now urging anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward.”

So the trams are set to be delivered a good six months early according to The Scotsman. No real surprise there. The council’s transport convenor and the council leader have both been pretty careful in interviews with The Reporter to say that the trams would be delivered no later than summer 2014. Neither has ever answered any question on the possibility of the trams being ready any sooner, but it seems to anyone keeping an eye on the development of the tram lines across the city (i.e. us!) that great strides have been made in the last five months since the new administration took over the reins.
However the new bin regime is still causing some local difficulties for some of our readers. Bins have not been collected in some areas, particularly at blocks of flats, although some readers have reported that their backlog has now been cleared.
The council have advised:-“The changes to individual bin collections have been the biggest change for residents and, in some areas, the wrong bins have been put out in the wrong week. It often takes only one or two residents to put their bin out on the wrong day and others in the area will follow suit. Where this has happened, recycling advisers have redelivered calendars and knocked on doors to remind residents about the new arrangements.”
The reasons for the new collection are clear. We have been told that we all need to recycle more as it simply costs too much to send all our refuse to landfill. The Transport and Environment convenor, Lesley Hinds, wrote an article for us explaining the background. But the execution of the new plans have not been without difficulty. So where are we now? Join Edinburgh Zoo this All Hallows Eve for a night filled with frights!
Things that go bump in the night, strange noises and ghostly sightings could all be in store on Wednesday 31st October at Edinburgh Zoo’s Halloween Ghost Hunt.
Join Ghost Finder General, Jimmy Devlin, and medium, Jackie Drummond, to investigate Edinburgh Zoo’s Mansion House. Built in 1793, this impressive house has over 200 years of history and tales to tell. Explore the ancient Mansion by torchlight to discover if there is any truth in the spooky stories and sightings that have been reported over the years.
Those brave enough to come along and spend the evening will enjoy a hot buffet and a briefing from Jimmy and Jackie, before the investigation itself begins at 8pm.
