The photo above shows the new huts at Lochrin Basin which are to be used along with moorings now being sold as an opportunity to live on the water. There are already some houseboats, some cafes and some offices on the canal. Now it is time for more activity on the canal according to the agents acting for the British Waterways Board. This follows the publication of a council strategy for regeneration of the canal earlier this year.
The plan to spark the renaissance of the Union Canal won a prestigious national waterways award in May 2012.
The Edinburgh Union Canal Strategy beat off strong competition from across the UK to scoop the ‘Strategy & Masterplanning’ category of The 2012 Waterways Renaissance Awards.
The awards, run by The Waterways Trust, recognise exceptional projects that have turned inland waterways into desirable places for living, learning and leisure.
The Canal Strategy is the result of partnership work between The City of Edinburgh Council and Scottish Canals.

It is reported today that The Scotsman now has more online readers than it has print readers. According to journalism website Hold The Front Page the paper has 513,000 online readers compared with 459,000 print readers per month….. Given that according to Council Chief Executive the city’s population has just gone through the 500,000 barrier last Friday, does that mean every single man, woman and child in Edinburgh is a Scotsman reader…?
