Police in Edinburgh are appealing for witnesses, after a woman with a crutch was assaulted and robbed in the Capital.

The incident happened around 8.55pm on Tuesday, in Henderson Street.

The 45-year-old victim, who has a broken foot, was walking with the aid of a crutch in Great Junction Street, after visiting the shops.

She turned into Henderson Street and passed the Trafalgar Bar, before she was pushed from behind. She fell to the ground and the suspect grabbed her handbag, before making off towards Yardhead, where he met with another man. Both men were then lost to sight.

The suspect is described as being in his 30s, 5ft 9ins tall, round build, with short blond hair, and wearing blue denim jeans and denim jacket.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: “While the woman wasn’t injured, she was understandably distressed as a result of what happened, and we are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to contact police immediately.

“Likewise, we want to speak to anyone who was in the area of Henderson Street who saw the suspect there, or nearby in the company of another man.

“Anyone who recognises his description, or who has any other information that can assist our inquiries, should also get in touch.”

Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.

Lothian and Borders Police are again urging the public to remain vigilant for an ongoing bankcard scam.

Elderly members of the community are contacted by telephone by an individual claiming to be from their bank.

During the course of the conversation, the caller is able to obtain the victim’s bank details and arranges for a courier to uplift their bankcard and replace it with a new one.

They then use the card and personal information to rob the cardholder’s bank account of sums of cash.

Detectives are issuing a warning following an incident of this nature in Boswall Terrace, Edinburgh yesterday (Monday).

A 65-year-old woman received a telephone call from someone impersonating a bank employee, who obtained her bank details before arranging for a courier to collect her bankcard.

On this occasion, however, the bankcard was not handed to the suspects as it had been provided to staff at the woman’s local bank earlier in the day.

Communities are now being reminded to report any similar calls to police immediately.

A police spokesman said: “This scam is known to be operating within the Lothians area and other areas across the central belt and the public should not be taken in by the caller’s rouse, no mater how convincing they sound.

“Genuine bank employees do not contact customers requesting their details, nor do they arrange an uplift for bankcards and so if anyone receives a call like this, they should report the matter to their local policing team.”

Anyone with any information can contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or the charity Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
