A grow your own event for green fingers is due to take place at the Waste Education Cabin this bank holiday.
The Cabin, which is based at Seafield Community Recycling Centre encourages local residents, both young and old, to become more aware of the environment around them.
On Monday, the cabin will be decked out in all things green – and during the fun-packed day, children and parents will learn how to grow their own fruit and vegetables.
During the day there will be the chance to hear more about the beasties which live in compost heaps. There will also be information on the benefits of growing your own food.
Held at Edinburgh’s largest community recycling centre there will also be competitions, prizes, freebies and much more fun to fill up the bank holiday.
Councillor Robert Aldridge, Environmental Leader, said: “The Waste Education Cabin is a fantastic resource for children and adults alike. The cabin takes an informative and fascinating look at what happens to waste in our city. It is important young and old alike know about the benefits of growing your own food and as well as the fun element to this day there is also the serious message that everyone can do their bit to reduce, reuse and recycle.”
Recently, young people from St John’s RC Primary School and Leith Walk Primary School gave the Cabin a make-over and transformed the exterior of the Cabin.
Throughout the city, the public are recycling more and more waste each year through the kerbside collections, on-street sites and Community Recycling Centres.
The range of materials that can be recycled is increasing all the time. For example, furniture and other good quality items can be donated to the Reuse Cabin at all four Community Recycling Centres in Edinburgh.
The event takes place on Monday 23 May from 11am-3pm at Seafield Community Recycling Centre, Fillyside Road, Edinburgh EH7 6RD.
