HMS Edinburgh is in town. She is berthed very near Britannia at Ocean Terminal for the next couple of days, so you still have time to go and see her.
Commander Paul Russell is in charge of the 140 metre long ship and its crew of around 260.
Edinburgh is the penultimate Type 42 destroyer in the Royal Navy and has just had a £17m refit in Portsmouth. At the moment the crew are being trained and over the coming months the ship will be deployed and is heading for the Falklands.
Built in 1983 the ship is nonetheless equipped with some state of the art technology, such as Seadart missiles, to protect both the ship itself and any aircraft carrier which it would usually be following.
One of the most exciting elements of such a ship is the Lynx helicopter which it carries on board, and which is literally folded into its hangar like a bird tucking its wings around it. It can then be pulled out and airborne in 45 minutes, often for search and rescue missions.
