An Edinburgh man, Stuart Adams,  was jailed for nine months yesterday for an attack on his girlfriend, and the unthinkable crime of ‘stamping two puppies to death.’ The BBC reports that Sheriff Isobel McColl said that she had never encountered such a case.

Tickets for the London Olympics 2012 have now gone on sale online. We are told that the Olympics will bring tourists north of the border too, even if we will not have any of the sporting events here. We are also promised a cultural Olympiad as we reported in January.

The Scotsman reports that the proposed biomass plant in Leith has resulted in 1800 objections, and that some of the objectors claim it will have more visual impact than the Forth Bridge – and not in a good way.

Scotland, Ireland and Sri Lanka are to contest a triangular one-day series in Edinburgh in July. The matches, to be held at the Citylets Grange, will follow Sri Lanka’s tour of England, which consists of two Tests and five one-day internationals. Ireland face Sri Lanka on July 11 and Scotland the following day before the hosts take on the tourists on July 13.

Hotels in Edinburgh were among the most occupied in the world last year. The data analysis, carried out by the professional services organization, Deloitte, ranked Scotland’s capital ninth in the world with 76.6 per cent of rooms full. This makes it the only Scottish city in the top ten.

Sydney, Australia came top of the rankings with 83.5 per cent of its hotel rooms full, followed by Seoul, South Korea. London was in third with 82.1 per cent occupancy, an improvement of 2.1 per cent since 2009. Edinburgh has also increased their occupancy rate since 2009, by 2.3 per cent.
