12.45-1.30pm at Hawthornden Lecture Theatre – Weston Link (National Gallery Complex) Free No booking required: free, unticketed.

The work of the Glasgow-born Thomas Campbell (1777-1844) is almost entirely overshadowed by that of his contemporary compatriots, Scott and Byron. The National Galleries of Scotland hold Turner’s wonderful set of watercolours commissioned to illustrate an 1837 edition of Campbell’s Poems. Campbell’s own story is a fascinating one; the story of Turner’s commission is equally revealing of the artist’s approach to his work. A talk by Mungo Campbell, Deputy Director of the Hunterian Museum & Art Gallery.

At the Cameo Love and Other Drugs starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway(recently seen filming in Edinburgh). Based on Jamie Reidy’s memoir ‘Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman’, LOVE & OTHER DRUGS is a bright and sexy romantic comedy with sharp lead performances from Anne Hathaway (RACHEL GETTING MARRIED) and Jake Gyllenhaal (DONNIE DARKO).

Maggie (Hathaway) is a free-spirited artist who thinks true love is a complete fallacy. That is until she meets Jamie (Gyllenhaal), a handsome and charming pharmaceutical salesman who’s used to getting what he wants. Eschewing the formulaic slushiness of ten-a-penny Hollywood romcoms, Zwick’s (BLOOD DIAMOND) intelligently scripted film takes an adult look at what happens when love strikes out of the blue.

At Cineworld Edinburgh The Next Three Days (12a) has just opened starring Russell Crowe and Liam Neeson.

One man has just 72 hours to break his wife out of prison, risking everything for the woman he loves…

The idyllic family life of John Brennan (Russell Crowe) is shattered when his wife Lara (Elizabeth Banks) is arrested for murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison. John, a professor of English at a community college, is convinced of her innocence. While he desperately holds his family together, he pursues every means available to prove she didn’t commit murder. After three years, and with the rejection of their final appeal, Lara becomes desperate and attempts suicide. John decides there is only one course of action: he must break her out of prison. Enlisting the help of Damon Pennington (Liam Neeson), John embarks on a dangerous and elaborate plan to save his wife. This is a tense action-thriller from Oscar-winning screenwriter and director Paul Haggis (writer/director of Crash), based on the French thriller Pour Elle.

And then there is the wonderful Johnny Depp starring alongside Angelina Jolie in The Tourist. Good mystery movie with some real action and comedy moments.

Hairspray is on for the last few days of its run ending this Sunday. You might be lucky enough to get tickets. Contact the Box Office through The Playhouse website.
