This week we experienced working in a real office environment, with a receptionist, lift, printing facilities…..and new friends.
The Melting Pot is as they say themselves, “More than a place to work”. Their members have access to a shared serviced office space right in the city centre whenever you need it at a fraction of the cost of running a traditional office. And of course they have high speed internet access, essential to the smooth running of The Edinburgh Reporter – and unlimited tea and coffee! At the moment they have over 100 members, ensuring a real community feel to the office, where they also organise regular networking events. Whether you are just tired of working on your own all the time, or have to drag yourself away from the diversions of the laundry then this is a good option for homeworkers. There is also the opportunity to spark ideas with each other – which certainly happened when we were there.
You can get a half day pass for £10 or rent by the hour at £5 an hour. The Melting Pot opens at 9am and closes at 6pm on Monday Wednesday and Friday and 9pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It was free for us as they were running an Open Day to give us all a taste of what it would be like to work here from time to time. You can find out more on their website or by phoning 0131 243 2626 or by emailing.
Round our table there was a hugely diverse bunch of people.
Steve Hammond Matthews was working on the social acceptance of using hearing protection at music venues today with Emma Quayle – a venture in the early stages of development.
“I also make yurts and provide business analysis services to small and medium business in the Edinburgh area.” (and they say women are best at multi-tasking!

Emma Quayle is a sound artist. She has her own website and may be contacted by email. We interviewed her about her business, and it seemed appropriate to let you hear her interview!
Adam Aaron is building a website for one of his clients. You can see some of his work here. And you can contact him here mobile: 07890 106 586 email: adam@aaaron.org
Jennifer Lovatt is the Community Manager for Yelp Edinburgh. This is a website worth knowing about – where you can leave your own reviews of Edinburgh restaurants, or indeed any other Edinburgh-based business.
We liked it, but even if you don’t need an office space The Melting Pot offers a good space to hold corporate events.
