Improving pedestrian crossing times
The council’s Transport and Environment meets on Thursday when it will discuss how to resolve delays to pedestrians at pedestrian crossings.
It was Cllr Danny Aston who first raised the matter in November last year asking for some of the delays to pedestrians to be reduced. He asserted that according to Sustrans Scotland 40% of Edinburgh’s pavements did not meet minimum width and there were nearly 17,000 substandard dropped kerbs in the city.
Cllr Aston asked for a report on progress and that the report would include options for increasing the “green man” time allowed for pedestrians at both pelican and puffin crossings.
There are 655 sets of signals on the council’s adopted road network. It is standard practice for standalone pedestrian crossings to have a maximum vehicle green man time of 20 seconds. There is a safety period of about 4 to 6 seconds after that before the pedestrian green man appears.
Some pedestrian crossings are operated on fixed time scales and others are activated by vehicles depending on the speed limit on the road.
Council officers say they are working to identify signalised junctions where pedestrian waiting times can be reduced and in the first place they are looking at school locations.

Living Streets Edinburgh reviewed the crossing times on signalised crossings in 2022 and produced a report. Read that here.
