The Cycling Gardeners use cargo bikes to get their staff and tools around the city.

When electric power tool manufacture Stihl heard about the way they have set up their business, they came to Scotland and made a promo video about the company.

Callum Ross, company director said:  “It’s really flattering that Stihl have taken such an interest in our company. This reinforces that what we have created over the last few years is a concept that our clients and also the companies within the industry see as the way forward.”

The Cycling Gardeners have expanded their fleet to five cargo bikes and have built a base of over 150 customers. Their unique approach and green ethos have earned them a strong reputation in Edinburgh as a reliable and environmentally conscious gardening service.

The transition from a conventional gardening business model to one based on cargo bikes and electric tools was not merely a logistical shift but also a conceptual overhaul. The business model of The Cycling Gardeners was built around sustainability and efficiency.

The company invested in electric cargo bikes for transportation and electric tools for gardening tasks, partly with the help of a grant from SPOKES the Lothian Cycle Campaign.

This not only reduced their carbon footprint but also addressed the logistical challenges of navigating Edinburgh’s busy streets and limited parking spaces. Beyond technological innovations, The Cycling Gardeners employed various eco-friendly garden maintenance practices. These include the use of peat-free compost, minimal mineral fertilizers, and organic methods for weed and pest control.
