The world is braced for a glut of exciting sporting events in 2024 with the European Football Championships taking place in Germany, the Summer Olympics descending on Paris, and the T20 Cricket World Cup being shared between the USA and the West Indies.
But you don’t need a passport to enjoy all the best sports, with the UK hosting a great selection of events to captivate audiences.
Take a look below at the 7 top sporting highlights the UK can look forward to in 2024.
The Open
Golf fans will be travelling from all over the world to enjoy the historic Old Course of Royal Troon, which is hosting the 152nd Open.
The small coastal town of Troon is used to golf fans flocking to its shores, but this will be the first time since 2016 that the Open Championship is held here. The last time the Open was held here, Henrik Stenson overcame Phil Mickelson in a battle for the ages.
This will be the 10th time Troon has hosted the championship and the event will run from July 14th to the 21st.
Champions League Final
The Champions League is the promised land of European football where the top teams battle it out and are rewarded with millions in prize money and TV revenue. As one of the biggest club football tournaments in the world, many countries bid for the honour of being able to host the final.
This year, the Champions League final will be held at Wembley Stadium on Saturday the 1st of June. Manchester City will be hoping to emulate last season’s European success, and the only other English team that is still in the tournament is Arsenal. The Gunners will be desperate to take the short trip across London to reach the final.
Manchester City are the current 9/4 favourites, with Arsenal behind Bayern Munich and Real Madrid at 6/1. Of course, UK bettors can shop for the best odds and deals that can improve returns, for example by considering overseas betting sites which according to Techopedia, offer competitive odds, great bonuses, and a safe payment experience.
World Indoor Athletics Championships
Glasgow is set to host the World Indoor Athletics Championships from the 1st to the 3rd of March. The event will see as many as 650 competitors competing on behalf of over 130 countries in a range of disciplines.
This event will mark the 10th anniversary of Glasgow hosting the Commonwealth Games and is a testament to the support and infrastructure in Scotland’s biggest city.
Wimbledon
The 2024 Wimbledon Championships will take place from July 1st to the 14th and will welcome the biggest names in tennis to London.
Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament still in operation and is also the most prestigious. As well as welcoming the world’s top tennis stars, some of the world’s top celebrities will also be spotted in the stands.
The Grand National
Aintree will host the world-famous Grand National from April 11th to the 13th, with the main event taking place on the last day. The Grand National is the world’s greatest steeplechase and is one of the most bet-on events in the horse racing calendar.
Even people without an interest in horse racing get carried away with the excitement and an estimated 13 million people place bets on the event in the UK alone. This equates to roughly one-third of the adult population.
The Grand Prix
The British Grand Prix is held at Silverstone Racetrack and sees the world’s top Formula 1 drivers face off across 52 laps. The British Grand Prix is scheduled for July 7th, with qualifying and practice laps taking place in the days leading up to the race.
It will come as no surprise to anyone who follows motorsports that Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the 2023 event. Whether the other teams can close the gap this season remains to be seen.
