Thousands gathered on the beach at Portobello to watch or take part in the unofficial Loony Dook – the best way to ward off any hit of excess from Hogmanay.

Young and old took a run for it into the sea, perhaps made a little easier by the fact that the weather was bright and sunny, but there were a few who turned back at the water’s edge.
