Glasgow Clan, who play in Britain’s top ice hockey league, the Elite League, have suspended to senior figures, their chief executive, Gareth Chalmers, and head coach, Malcolm Cameron (pictured by Al Goold courtesy of Premier Sports Elite League).

Clan chairman Neil Black issued a terse statement on social media at 8am on Friday which said: “At 19.45pm last night (Thursday) I was made aware for the first time of a major situation which merits further internal investigation and this has led to the immediate suspension of both Clan chief executive Gareth Chalmers and the Clan head coach Malcolm Cameron.”

Clan media officer Craig Anderson refused to say who would be coaching the club in Friday’s Challenge Cup clash with Belfast Giants at Braehead (face-off 7.30pm).

And he declined to elaborate on the statement from Black.

All Anderson would say is: “There will be a further statement when I get it and I will be making no further comment at this time.”

On Thursday, Clan announced they had signed the signing of 33-year-old Finnish defenceman Lasse Uusivirta (pictured) who has played in North America and Europe. Fans were vocal on social media on Thursday evening and then hours later the club did a u-turn saying the deal was off.

It has been a bad week for Clan as Chalmers issued a statement apologising to fans after what they terms was a “disastrous” start to the season.

They have lost their first seven games in all tournaments and sit bottom of the league and Challenge Cup with zero points in both competitions.
