The council meets today to discuss and set its revenue budget for the next three years.

There are organisations who will address the meeting before the councillors go on to discuss their various political aspirations and spending plans – Unison, Edinburgh Tenants Federation, Edinburgh TUC and the Educational Institute of Scotland.

Unite the union will hold a protest outside the City Chambers from 8.30am ahead of all 63 councillors convening.

Unite Deputy Scottish Secretary, Mary Alexander, said: “The proposals by Edinburgh City Council to cut £88m over the next three years will have a damaging impact on service provision, while piling further pressure on council workers.

“Despite the public assurances that no jobs will be lost the reality is that hundreds of jobs could face the axe over the coming years. Unite is also deeply concerned that as part of these proposals the council is planning to cut school budgets, attack concessionary tram travel, library open times, and community policing. These cuts will have real and tangible impacts on the people of Edinburgh.”

Edinburgh TUC will speak to their report as to what can be done about child poverty which you can read in full below.

Des Loughney, Secretary of Edinburgh Trade Union Council is expected to say: “Child Poverty is worsening in Edinburgh and is placing a greater and greater burden on Edinburgh schools.

“We call on the Scottish Government  and the City Council to allocate more resources to Edinburgh schools to support children and parents in dealing with poverty.”
