Labour MP Ian Murray was today granted an urgent question in the Commons and told MPs that Boris Johnson is not above the law.
The Edinburgh South MP said the government must do as the law says, which will require him to request a Brexit extension after October 19 whether a deal or no deal fails to get a majority in Parliament.
He challenged Brexit Minister James Duddridge in the Commons a day after Mr Johnson signalled to Mr Murray that he would not seek an extension.
Ian Murray, Labour MP for Edinburgh South, said: “The Supreme Court decision this week and the debate in the House with the Prime Minister was a national embarrassment.
“In any other political equilibrium, he would have seriously considered his position.
“Many people have lost their jobs in government for a fraction of what he has done.
“The Prime Minister is not above the law and he cannot simply refuse to request a Brexit extension. That is the law of this land and to say he won’t do this is disturbing.
“I hope we don’t have to take him to court again. The Government must confirm that the Prime Minister was wrong to say he will not comply with the law and will send the letter to the EU to seek an extension to the Brexit deadline as per the Act of Parliament.”
