Families in Edinburgh looking for fun activities this Easter holidays could give their children aged 10 and over the opportunity to have a go at driving a real car.

Young Driver, the UK’s largest provider of pre-17 driving tuition, will be running an event on Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th April at the Royal Highland Centre, offering anyone aged 10-17 the chance to learn how to drive.

Youngsters have lessons in dual controlled Vauxhall Corsas, with highly qualified driving instructors. A special road system is created, with traffic signs, roundabouts and junctions, along with special areas to practice manoeuvres such as steering, control and parking – allowing young people to get a real taste of being a driver.

By extending the learning period Young Driver aims to create a safer next generation of new drivers, as well as safer cyclists and pedestrians. Early driver tuition has been shown to half the accident rates of newly qualified drivers in those first few vital months after passing their test.

Laura White, head of marketing at Young Driver, said: “If you’re looking for something different to do this Easter, then letting your child get behind the wheel of a car in a safe, fun environment is certainly something they’ll never forget! The concept is hugely important in terms of road safety, but they’ll also have great fun, and it’s a fantastic boost to their confidence to have a go at something they wouldn’t normally be able to attempt.”

Young Driver usually operates at the Royal Highland Centre on weekend dates across the year. Driving tuition is available for disabled youngsters and Young Driver can also cater for birthday parties. Thirty or sixty-minute lessons must be booked in advance and prices start from £36.99.
