Arbroath 1 Edinburgh City 4 – Irn Bru Cup, Friday 12th October 2018, Gayfield
Edinburgh City pulled off one of the best results in their history tonight when they hammered League One leaders Arbroath 4-1 in the Irn-Bru Cup.
City – themselves leading League Two – fell behind to an early McKenna goal for Arbroath which was against the run of play. But James McDonaugh’s team stormed back with an impressive display of slick, passing football and two goals from Blair Henderson – both penalties – added to goals from Scott Shepherd and Liam Henderson secured a famous and thoroughly deserved win. City will now take their place in Tuesday’s draw for the quarter finals and on this display will fear no one.
The game was televised live on BBC Alba – City’s first game shown live on television. City manager McDonaugh told the BBC after the game:
“It was a bit of a surprise because Arbroath are a strong team.
“There were a few changes made tonight, but the boys came through strong in the second half. This has been a big step for the club – it’s the first time on TV and into the quarter-finals for the first time.
“We are just enjoying win after win while it lasts – it’s not going to last forever.”
