John P. Mackintosh is widely recognised as one of the most influential political figures of his generation. A highly respected academic, gifted orator and prolific writer, he served from 1966 to 1978 as Labour MP for Berwick and East Lothian and was Professor of Politics at the University of Edinburgh.
The John P. Mackintosh Memorial Debate is being organised jointly by the University of Edinburgh and the Scottish Parliament to mark the 40th Anniversary of the death of John P. Mackintosh. This wide ranging discussion, led by a panel of leading figures from political and academic life, will consider Mackintosh’s legacy and will examine some of the contemporary issues and challenges facing democracy today.

The event will be chaired by the Rt Hon Ken Macintosh MSP, Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament and will be followed by a reception in the Garden Lobby of the Scottish Parliament which will be addressed by Professor Peter Mathieson, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh and Iain Gray MSP for East Lothian.

Those attending will have an opportunity to view an exhibition on the life of John P. Mackintosh. During the reception, Professor Peter Mathieson, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University and Iain Gray MSP will address the audience.
