As intimated in The Edinburgh Reporter on Sunday, Hearts have confirmed the signing of Northern Ireland defender Aaron Hughes until the end of this season.

Hughes recently played in the Indian Super League where he captained Kerala Blasters and he arrives at Tynecastle as a free agent.

The 37-year-old is Northern Ireland’s most capped outfield player (only legendary goalkeeper Pat Jennings has more caps) and has played for the likes of Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers. He made a substitute appearance for Northern Ireland at last summer’s European Championships in France. His huge experience may prove vital at shoring up the Hearts defence.

Hearts have also signed former Hamilton Academical full-back Lennard Sowah. The German defender, who has also played for Hamburger SV in his homeland and Millwall in England, has also signed until the end of the season.
