Gullane Ladies Golf Club in East Lothian has raised over £7,800 for Breast Cancer Now, the largest breast cancer charity working in Scotland.

The club has dedicated its annual open greens day, held every August, to the charity for the last two years. All of the money raised from this event has been donated towards Breast Cancer Now’s life-saving research.

Captain of the Club, Nicky Black, commented on the fundraising : ”The event was a great success and we’re so pleased to have raised £7,849 for this very worthy cause. Every ten minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and sadly every 45 minutes a woman dies from the disease. We’re supporting Breast Cancer Now because we believe that if we all act now, by 2050, we can stop women dying from breast cancer.”

She added that the charity’s aim to fund breast cancer research and discover treatments, preventions and cures for the disease, resonated with the experiences of many club members.

”Two members of my close family have had breast cancer, and as a women’s golf club we’ve had many members either suffering from the disease, or whose loved ones have been affected. It was a popular and worthwhile choice for our club.”

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, affecting an estimated one in eight women during their lifetime. More women than ever are currently afflicted with breast cancer, with 4,600 diagnoses made each year in Scotland, and an estimated 1,000 women die from the disease annually.

Breast Cancer Now is bringing together all those affected by the disease to improve the way breast cancer is prevented, detected and treated to move towards a generation when it is no longer feared and everybody lives.
