The Lord Lieutenant of Edinburgh the Rt Hon Donald Wilson and the Council’s Health Convener, Councillor Ricky Henderson welcomed The Princess Royal to Firrhill Technology Hub for a tour of the facilities.
The Hub helps people with physical disabilities to use technology as part of a rehabilitation plan to increase independence in daily living activities such as meal preparation, shopping, banking and orientation around the city. This equipment can be loaned for use at home and in the community. An assistive technology occupational therapist is also on hand to provide specialist advice.
Health, Social Care and Housing Convener, Councillor Ricky Henderson, said: “I was very happy to welcome the Princess Royal to the Firrhill Technology Hub, which is doing a fantastic job of using cutting edge technology to enhance the lives of people with disabilities.
“We are increasingly becoming a digital society and it is vital that disabled people also have access to these new technologies, which can be used to improve their general wellbeing and help them to live more independently.”
The Lord Provost Donald Wilson, commented: “This Hub is truly pioneering and it is the first of its type in Scotland. The Princess Royal’s visit is proof of that. As someone who has worked in IT for many years, I am a great supporter of investment in technology which enhances people’s lives. The work carried out at the technology hub really does support the wellbeing of residents day in and day out.
“There is no reason for anyone with a disability to be left behind in the digital age. I urge local residents to get in touch with the Hub if they feel if could help in any way.”
