June is officially movie month in Edinburgh, and it all begins this Sunday 8 June 2014.

In the build-up to the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2014 (18-29 June 2014), This is Edinburgh, in collaboration with the EIFF, is inviting locals of all ages to a number of free outdoor cinema screenings and movie related workshops across the city centre.

Kicking off Film in the City on 8 June, the Grassmarket will be transformed with family-friendly ‘dance-along’ screenings of musical favourites such as Grease and Top Hat.  The following weekend will see outdoor screenings return to St Andrew Square (13-15 June) with a collection of cinematic gems. Film in the City will finish up with a packed weekend programme (20- 22 June) of movie inspired workshops, engaging Q&As and animation sessions at Festival Square. Highlights include special animation workshops celebrating the pioneering filmmaker Norman McLaren.

Speaking on behalf of the city centre campaign, This is Edinburgh, Andy Neal, Chief Executive of Essential Edinburgh said: “Edinburgh always has an incredible energy during the EIFF. Film in the City aims to build on that buzz and create some new exciting, free events that everyone can come along and enjoy. In previous years, outdoor screenings at St Andrew Square were extremely popular and we’re delighted to not only bring them back, but expand the offering to include these new terrific events at the West End and the Grassmarket.”

Ken Hay, Chief Executive of Edinburgh International Film Festival said: “EIFF is delighted to be working with This is Edinburgh in extending the celebration of film in June to include a range of outdoor screenings and events in fantastic city centre locations.”

This dance-along extravaganza is part of Get Scotland Dancing – a nationwide project that does exactly what it says on the tin! Dance Base is delighted to be involved in Film in the City, and we whole-heartedly welcome the opportunity to work with our neighbours in the Grassmarket to create this special afternoon that celebrates dance at the movies.”
