As first nights go this wasn’t half bad, not that this duo do anything by halves.
The Sisters are by their own admission cheeky and dirty, so this is not a show for the faint-hearted. (The clue is in the name of the show – Naked as the Day they were Born Again!) Their act depends upon audience participation and so it will be a bit different each night depending on the choices they make. What is clear however is that they did not plant stooges in the audience to help them along on their opening night. Roy from Corstorphine was clearly happy to be chosen and played his part well, going home with glitter in all the right places.
I saw the Sisters last year, and although I am still convinced that one of them has changed, I still like them very much. The problem with going to see a show again which has not really altered its basic format is that the element of surprise cannot of course be recaptured. But the antidote to that is to take chums who are surprised by the act and then enjoy it vicariously. The burlesque act has been coming to Edinburgh for around 9 years so some of you will probably have seen them before too.
The girls are at their best on the trapeze, and as two girl circuses go they can certainly make all the right moves, shown off only during their finale last night. This was a pity and it would be good if they made more use of their circus skills throughout the show, which had a tiny bit of a lull in the middle.
The Spiegeltent was not absolutely full, but it was still a good attendance and they certainly deserve a larger audience for the rest of their run.
Go and see them, but prepare yourself!
