Four local charities are to benefit from Brodies Champions of Tennis – Maggie’s Centre; Edinburgh Dog & Cat Home; Fresh Start; and LifeCare.
Viki Mendelssohn, Tournament Director, said:- ‘My vision for this fantastic event was always that some of the most local causes would benefit. I’m delighted that we’ve been able to offer each of these charities a day each at the event during which they can fundraise while introducing the work that they do to the spectators.
‘The players are all aware of our plan and they too are delighted that we take the opportunity to raise awareness for these individual causes alongside much needed funds.’
Mark Cooper, Community Fundraiser, Maggie’s Edinburgh – which will benefit from the opening day on Thursday 20 June, said:- “Everyone at Maggie’s Edinburgh is thrilled to be associated with such a prestigious event. It’s great for Edinburgh to have such an array of tennis legends in the Capital. The fact that Maggie’s and other charities can benefit from this event makes it even more special.”
Friday 21 June is the turn of Edinburgh Dog & Cat Home. David Ewing, Manager, said:- ‘We are delighted to have been asked to be a part of Brodies Champions of Tennis. To be selected as one of the charities to benefit from this high-profile event is a great honour. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we have been caring for Edinburgh’s stray and unwanted dogs and cats since 1883 so are one of the city’s oldest charities. We hope that the publicity associated with this event will enable us to re-home more animals and increase people’s awareness of our work.’
Partner on Saturday 22 June is Fresh Start, the charity which helps people make a home for themselves. Managing Director Keith Robertson is delighted that his charity has been selected to benefit. He said: “We are positive that Brodies Champions of Tennis will be a great credit to Edinburgh. We hope we will be as well received as the players when we spent the day at the event collecting to help people make a home for themselves.”
Finals day, Sunday 23 June is for LifeCare, a charity locally based at Stockbridge. Su Millar, Chief Executive said: ‘LifeCare supports people with dementia, older people and carers to live as independently as possible at home, and provides a range of other intergenerational services. We are very excited to have been chosen as one of the local charities to benefit from this unique and first time ever event in the Scottish calendar and we encourage as many people as possible to come along to support it.”
