5th Bo’ness Revival Hill Climb, 8-9 September 2012

Report and Photo – John Preece

Organised with the support of Falkirk Council and Kinneil Estate, the 5th Bo’ness Revival Hill Climb was held over the weekend with several competitors from the Edinburgh area taking part. The event is for ‘classic’ saloon and sports cars from pre-1973 and is arranged in several classes in order to even out the competition and the prizes. Held in conjunction with the racingis a classic car show and included car clubs from all over Scotland.

The racing took place on approximately 600 yards – it is a pre-1973 event – of the estate roads, with cars setting off individually in order to record their fastest time. Fastest in each class wins. Simple.

Unfortunately, only one of the Edinburgh-based drivers was to be awarded over the two days and that honour fell to Jock MacKinnon in his pre-1930’s 3 Litre Bentley. He recorded fastest times of 37.29/37.06 seconds on the Saturday to win the class and 37.16/37.05 seconds on the Sunday, being pipped to the post by Susan Shoosmith from Biggar who recorded times of 36.03/35.81 seconds in her 4 1/2 litre Bentley. Bigger (Biggar?) sometimes is better!

Other in and around Edinburgh competitors included Francis Galashin (Alvis 4.3), Ross McLeod (MG Spridget) and Dalkeith’s David Wyatt (Opel Manta), none of whom were on the ‘podium’, but, at the end of the day, they and all the other competitors – one all the way from Malvern! – were there for the enjoyment and to meet up with friends and like minded people.

In spite of a bit of dampness on the Saturday, the event was very well attended and has proceeded to go from strength to strength over the five years, so far, which it couldn’t do without the army of unpaid volunteer marshals, helpers, programme sellers (Scouts again), etc which events like this depend on. Long may it continue.
