This year, Doors Open Day will include The Assembly Rooms in George Street which opens its doors to showcase its £9.3million refurbishment to the public for the first time. (We have been round already, and have to tell you that among the best improvements are the newly done-up loos!)

Open on Sunday 23 September, 11am until 4 pm, the Georgian A-listed building has a fascinating history and has always played an important part in Edinburgh’s cultural, commercial and business life. Initially built in 1787, Assembly Rooms Edinburgh is the most important building of its type surviving in the UK owing to the quality of its architecture and contribution to the social history of Edinburgh.

Now, with 6000 books of gold leaf highlighting its period features, half a million newly cleaned crystals in its 25 chandeliers and acres of new tech infrastructure to make the venue fit for contemporary purpose, Assembly Rooms is back in business.

This will be a unique opportunity for members of the public to walk the halls where Dickens read from A Christmas Carol and see the transformed rooms in all their breathtaking glory.

Edinburgh Doors Open Day is organised by the Cockburn Association in partnership with Edinburgh World Heritage and the Scottish Civic Trust.  Assembly Rooms Edinburgh is one of over 120 sites and events open to the public throughout the city.  The event at Assembly Rooms will include guided tours of the venue and refreshments.
