The Lothian and Borders Police Board meet this morning at the City Chambers. There is a report before the meeting from the Chief Constable David Strang which includes the following statement. (You need to know that SNT stands for Safer Neighbourhoood Teams):-

11. Fire, Home and Road Safety

11.1 In Edinburgh an average of 12 people are killed or seriously injured in road traffic collisions every month. Both pedestrian and driver alcohol consumption contribute to the number of casualties. Road Safety is frequently raised as an issue through community engagement with SNTs. The Public Perception Survey confirms that inappropriate parking and dangerous driving or speeding are community priorities.

11.2 ‘A’ Division continues to support Streets Ahead, the city’s Road Safety Partnership. Road Safety Officers and local SNT and SLO resources support partnership schemes to promote road safety, and challenge inappropriate parking around schools. This includes supporting annually the attendance of all Primary 7 children in Edinburgh to the Risk Factory, a CEC led purpose- built, interactive, experiential community safety centre that provides safety education.”

It is difficult to believe that there are as many as a dozen road casualties each month. We realise that this covers all road users however we feel that many of these incidents must go unreported as we do not think we hear about them all.
