Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses after flares were set off at a football match last week.

During the match at Easter Road between Hibernian FC and Heart of Midlothian FC, on Monday 2 January, two smoke canisters were discharged in the upper stand of the away end.

The incidents happened immediately after the first and second Hearts’ goals and, although no one was injured, officers are carrying out enquiries to identify those responsible.

A police spokesman said:- “This mindless act of stupidity could have put the rest of the crowd at significant risk and anyone who can help identify the suspects is asked to contact police immediately.

“We will be working closely with both clubs and security personnel to ensure incidents like this do not happen again.”

The incident happened around 4.50pm, at Lothian Grocer in John Street.

The suspect entered the premises and threatened the female shop assistant with a knife, before grabbing the till and making his escape.

He dropped the till outside the shop, however he still managed to make off with the cash tray, which contained a three-figure sum of cash. He was last seen running into Carnethy Avenue.

A police spokesman said: “While she wasn’t seriously injured, the female shop assistant was still understandably shaken as a result of what happened, and we are appealing for any information that can help us trace the suspect.

“He is described as white, 20 to 30s, 5ft 3ins to 5ft 8ins tall, medium build, with dark shoulder length hair, and stubble. He had a Scottish accent, and wore a dark hoody.

“Likewise anyone who recognises the description of the suspect, or who has any other information that can assist our inquiries, should also get in touch.”

Anyone with information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
