Edinburgh Napier University are holding an open day today. So if you are interested in enrolling for some studies then get yourself along to one of the three campuses to find out what they offer.

Rugby in the sun could be an enjoyable day out – at least for the spectators! Edinburgh Accies play Hawick at Raeburn Place today in the Scottish Hydro Premiership Division One, Currie are at home to Heriots, and Stewart’s Melville FP are heading for Hamilton . The Bupa Great Edinburgh Run takes place today and The Reporter is taking part! Look out for number 51…..but no heckling please! (A lot of training has gone into this effort.) There will be thousands of fun runners and other more professional types pounding the city streets on Sunday. The route starts and ends in Holyrood Park this year. There is no parking available at the start/finish area so you should just put your jogging shoes on and walk down there. All the runners are advised to be there about an hour before they are due to start. Good luck to everyone!

The Scottish Indian Arts Forum will be holding the Dusherra Festival on Calton Hill today  with entertainment, food and activities for children as well as fireworks in the evening.

The Gorgie and Dalry Community Council meet tonight at St Martin’s Church, 232 Dalry Road, between 7pm and 9pm. All residents are invited to come along but The Edinburgh Reporter will have a full report incase you cannot make it.

Colum Sands appears at Edinburgh Folk Club tonight at the Pleasance Cabaret Bar. “A member of the internationally renowned Sands Family from County Down, Colum established his reputation as a songwriter with the release of his first solo album, Unapproved Road in 1981. Songs like Whatever you say, say nothing, and Almost every Circumstance were soon in the repertoire of artists from Billy Connolly to Maddy Prior and June Tabor.”

Gordon Schmidt studied Sculpture at the Emily Carr Institute, Vancouver and was an exchange student in the Environmental Art Department at Glasgow School of Art. Gordon’s practice is concerned with the understanding of the correlation between the performance and the document or the experience of the individual and the group. His artworks, which include video, collage and sculpture reference culturally significant events that he could not have experienced first hand. Recently Gordon has focused on the development  of new video works which draw upon found television and news footage from post-war Britain.

 

The Edinburgh Appathon takes place at The Informatics Forum today. Part of SVC2UK events across the UK. This is what they say will happen:-

This weekend event will bring together student developers and recently released government data sets in order to build applications on well-known consumer facing platforms.  We’ll have support available from the platform providers and also the government data guys.

Numberjacks comes to Edinburgh today.

 An award winning television series running on BBC TV’s CBeebies since 2006, the animated Numberjacks help young children learn about numbers, shapes and sizes in a fun and imaginative way.  The Numberjacks are ten superheroes who live inside a sofa, but now they are emerging from their home and TV screen for their first live show!

Bonhams are holding a whisky auction today. The auction will include “old and rare single malt whiskies from Scotland’s famous distilleries in Speyside, The Highlands, The Orkney Islands, Island of Islay, Campbeltown and Lowland malts, limited edition releases which commemorate various anniversaries such as Centenaries and other events relating to the Scotch Whisky Industry as a whole.”  It was Bonhams who sold the 70 year old Glenlivet for the victims of the earthquake in Japan.

At The Festival Theatre something to attract those of a certain age. Para Handy – A Voyage Round the Stories of Neil Munro is on until 15 October. 

The irrepressible captain of The Vital Spark and his ramshackle crew have become some of Scotland’s best-loved characters since they first appeared in 1906. Now, this major new stage version presents a 21st century take on Neil Munro’s beloved tales.
The adventures of Para Handy, his mate Dougie, engineer Macphail and cabin-boy Sunny Jim, travels from Clydeside breakers yard to the lochs of the Highlands. With a cast lead by Jimmy Chisholm as the eponymous captain, and fantastic, foot-tapping live music, Para Handy’s journeys are as engaging and entertaining in now as they were more than 100 years ago.

Edinburgh Zoo is holding a fundraising fire walk challenge on Friday 14 October and is inviting supporters to take part in this exhilarating test.  Are you brave enough to walk across 20 feet of burning embers to raise funds?

A number of the Zoo’s veterinary team and staff will take part, and the money raised will go towards buying specialised veterinary equipment, including a small animal ventilator, ECG machine and a flexible gastroscope.

The Swiss Ambassador’s Concert tonight at 7.30 at St Cecilia’s Hall.

Lionel Cottet, an acclaimed young cellist born in Geneva, has won many prestigious awards and has performed as a soloist with distinguished orchestras such as the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. He has a special interest in contemporary music and particularly enjoys performing in chamber ensembles. He plays an 1852 Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume violoncello.

Louis Schwizgebel-Wang, an acclaimed young pianist also born in Geneva, has won many prestigious awards and enjoys performing as a chamber musician. As a soloist he has appeared at fine international venues such as the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall in New York and Wigmore Hall in London.

The Swiss Ambassador’s Award Concert was established in the UK in 1999 with the aim of presenting talented young Swiss musicians in a concert at Wigmore Hall in London. Due to its popularity and musical excellence, the annual event now also tours in Manchester and Edinburgh. The concerts are organised by the Swiss Cultural Fund in Britain and the Embassy of Switzerland, in collaboration with the Swiss Consulates in the UK.

The Stevenson leading light from The National Museum of Scotland

Dr Alison Morrison-Low speaks tonight at the Edinburgh Writers’ Club. “As a child, Alison was fascinated by the Shipping Hall and Lighthouse Gallery in the Royal Museum, Chambers Street, Edinburgh, little knowing that one day she would be responsible for the material in it. Now Principal Curator, Historic Scientific Instruments and Photography, at National Museums Scotland, she drew on the Museum’s archives, and on the artefacts themselves (some of which were donated by the Stevenson family of engineers) to write Northern Lights: the Age of Scottish Lighthouses, published to celebrate the 200th anniversary this year of the building of the Bell Rock Lighthouse. She will talk about writing and researching Northern Lights.” They meet at the Eric Liddell Centre at Holy Corner.

British Sea Power at Liquid Room tonight at 7p.m. “British Sea Power are a six-piece band based in Brighton. They play emphatically melodic guitar pop mixed with angular British indie rock. The group originally formed in 2000 and released their first album, The Decline of British Sea Power, in 2001 to critical acclaim. Following numerous national tours and appearances at festivals such as Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, T in the Park and Bestival, the band scored their first top 10 album in 2009 with Do You Like Rock Music?”
