Composed in the late 80s during the fall of the Iron Curtain and a transition to democracy in the composers home country of Hungary, Kurtag’s Kafka Fragmente is a work of incredible boldness, based on tiny fragments from Franz Kafka’s diaries and letters, some less than a minute in length.
This colossal contemporary masterpiece pushes both audience and musicians in its intensity and agility. Vivid, emotionally powerful and yet fantastically fragile and lyrical at times, this is a piece of music which will completely engulf you.
True to Hebrides Ensemble programming ethics, the first half brings the programme full circle with works by Schumann and Janáček completing this literally theme and the link between song and words as well as Kurtag’s own homage to their works.

MoonWalk Edinburgh 2011

It’s the annual Edinburgh MoonWalk! A chance to get honed, toned and a little bit fitter while raising money for vital breast cancer causes in Scotland. This is the 6th year the event has taken place and over 10,000 men and women will be taking part to do the marathon (26.2 miles) and the half marathon (13.1 miles).
Entries have now closed but anyone who still wants to take part might still be able to go along and be a volunteer.

THE world’s top explorers and daredevils are gathering under one roof for one night only to share their experiences of adventure with a live audience.
More than 450 guests will be treated to six talks from some of the finest adventurers on the face of the planet during ‘A Night of Adventure’ at Vue Cinema, in Edinburgh’s Omni Centre, on Monday June 13, 2011.
Speakers will range from Andrew Murray, who ran from John O’Groats to the Sahara in 78 days, to Mark Beaumont, who cycled round the world in a record time of 194 days and 17 hours. There will also be tales from less conventional adventurers, including Simon Varwell, who went on a world-wide quest to visit all the places called Mullet. So far Simon’s search has taken him to far flung corners of the globe, including Albania and Australia.

Two Old Town Artists – A celebration of the life and work of Kenny Skeel and Nell Dunn A striking and charismatic couple, Kenny Skeel and Nell Dunn, were well known, much loved local artists, who lived in the Canongate from 1974 – 2009, and were closely involved with the Save Our Old Town campaign. Their work covered a wide creative spectrum: paintings, etchings, prints, exquisite pen and ink drawings, sculptures, banners, graphics, murals, sign-writing, shop fronts, specialist interior decoration, private and public commissions. Nell travelled the length and breadth of Scotland, and overseas, undertaking her very versatile and personal style of painting and interior decoration, leaving her mark on many private homes and public spaces. Kenny, well known for his distinctive shop fronts and murals, was a veteran of the Campaign for a Scottish Parliament and a founder member of the Regent Road vigils, a ‘free-thinker’ and great raconteur. This exhibition pays tribute to their achievements and memories.

This is a great opportunity for Dads to enjoy time with their children, tell stories, or listen to tales that promote the mportance and joy of active fatherhood. Whether you want to capture your organisation’s events (such as conferences, talks or media stunts) or inform people about a campaign, this course will equip you with the skills to make short videos at low cost. No prior knowledge is required.

A celebration of the silver screen, in honour of the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
In these relaxed and friendly discussions you won’t need any background knowledge, or advance reading; just book and turn up. We’ll run the discussion, so you can simply come fresh to the text of single poems, take the time to read deeply and let new discoveries emerge as you talk over poems with others.
In Spring 2011, some Saturday morning sessions will have a special theme; as well as this session in celebration of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, we’ll be taking a closer look at poems by songwriters and poems for April Fools! See what takes your fancy!

At the National Gallery of Scotland Dürer’s Fame Admission Free
Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) was the most important artist of the Northern Renaissance and one of the most celebrated artists of all time. Dürer’s Fame showcases a selection of around thirty prints, drawings and paintings from the National Galleries of Scotland’s collection, including the iconic prints Melancholy, Saint Jerome in his Study and Knight, Death and the Devil.
As well as featuring a selection of Dürer’s magnificent prints, this display also includes contemporary and later copies of his work, shown alongside imitations and a likely forgery, as well as portraits and works that reflect Dürer’s art.
In addition to famous examples by Italian and Netherlandish artists, the exhibition includes works by Scottish artists John Runciman (1744-1768/69) and William Bell Scott (1811-1890), and also considers Dürer’s continuing relevance in the 21st century.

Set in a late night bar in downtown Buenos Aires, and featuring some of the finest Tango dancers in the world, Midnight Tango takes you on a journey into the heart of this intoxicating city. As danger and excitement, joy and jealousy, pain and passion all combine – this is a spectacular and explosive evening not to be missed!

Fleet Foxes at Edinburgh Corn Exchange at 7pm
Melodic indie-folk band from Seattle whose refined lyrics and penchant for vocal harmonies have been well-received by fans and critics alike. Describing their music as ‘baroque harmonic pop jams’, the band signed to legendary label Sub Pop in 2008 and released their eponymous debut record in the same year. Like many alternative US bands, Fleet Foxes have enjoyed most of their success in Europe, with the album reaching number three and going platinum in the UK, as opposed to just scraping the top 40 in the US.
