There may be opera at the Big Screen on Lothian Road tonight. It is certainly listed on the BBC website – but we are not sure about the sound. The last time we told you about something at the Big Screen it was the Last Night of the Proms and there was no sound! So beware, but if you do get along then please let us know about the music.

Hebrides Ensemble – Kafka Fragmente 1 June 2011 at 7:30pm at The Queen’s Hall
Alexander Janiczek, violin
Elizabeth Watts, soprano
Schumann: Liederkreis Op. 39 movement 7 ‘Auf einer Burg’ [1840] (transcribed for cello and piano)
Janáček: The Kreutzer Sonata [1923] (arr. for piano trio by Till A. Koerber)
Kurtág: Kafka Fragments [1985-87] (for solo violin and soprano)
Composed in the late 80s during the fall of the Iron Curtain and a transition to democracy in the composers home country of Hungary, Kurtag’s Kafka Fragmente is a work of incredible boldness, based on tiny fragments from Franz Kafka’s diaries and letters, some less than a minute in length.
This colossal contemporary masterpiece pushes both audience and musicians in its intensity and agility. Vivid, emotionally powerful and yet fantastically fragile and lyrical at times, this is a piece of music which will completely engulf you.
True to Hebrides Ensemble programming ethics, the first half brings the programme full circle with works by Schumann and Janáček completing this literally theme and the link between song and words as well as Kurtag’s own homage to their works.
Thursday 2 June 2011
Planting of ‘The Poetry Tree’ at St Andrew Square Gardens. Takes place on Thursday, June 2nd, 11am.
Apocalypse Now at The Filmhouse Directed by Francis Ford Coppola/USA 1979/147 minutes/Rated 15
Cast: Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, Harrison Ford.
English, French, Vietnamese and Khmer with English subtitles showing at 2:30pm and 8:15pm
RESTORED CLASSIC
Heralded by many as the film that crystallises most perfectly the experience of the Vietnam War, Francis Ford Coppola’s hallucinatory masterpiece has been painstakingly restored by his own Zoetrope studios under his close supervision.
Troubled US Captain Willard (Martin Sheen), is given a special mission, to go far upriver into Cambodia. Once there, he is to track down renegade Colonel Kurtz (Brando) – a man who is waging his own personal and violent war – and assassinate him. Arriving on location massively overweight and with a shaven head, Brando was not exactly what Coppola had in mind as the power-crazed Kurtz. But, amid the psychedelia and barbarism, the brooding presence of the actor glimpsed in half-shadow brought a mythical quality to the role.
