PublishED is a student-run literary publication, aiming to provide an outlet for young writers as well as information and links to the publishing world, for those wanting to work in any aspect of the industry. The society also enables students to meet other writers and to take part in writing based events (amongst others). The first edition of the magazine is out in just under two weeks, to coincide with the launch party on Wednesday 24th November 2010, and will include poetry, prose and drama as well as interviews and articles.
Editor-in-Chief of PublishED, Matthew Oldfield and the co-editor, Jen Mah, are both Fourth year English Literature students at the University of Edinburgh. Matthew said:-“We were both looking to write for a creative writing magazine while at university and in the end, due to the absence of such a magazine, we decided to create our own! We started in May of this year, and have since raised close to £700 in funds for the publication . The events have included a book-sale, a pub quiz, a bowling night, a ghost story night, a Variety Night, and a cake sale. The launch edition of the publication will have a circulation of 500 copies.
We have big plans to expand the magazine, both in terms of pages and circulation. This first issue will include interviews with Iain Banks and Alexander McCall Smith, as well as the best in Edinburgh student prose, poetry, drama and illustration.
In terms of aims, we want to encourage student writing at Edinburgh University, give students an insight into the Publishing industry, and offer exposure to budding writers.
