In an unprecedented move the First Minister Alex Salmond has taken up the case of Precious Mhango – along with the leaders of the Scottish Catholic Church and the Church of Scotland. Precious is a young Malawian girl about to be extradited along with her mother. The problem is that they would almost undoubtedly be split up on return to their homeland as Precious’s mother is divorced from her husband, and a child is the property of the husband’s family under the law there.
